Long bio

Dr. Samantha-Israel Iwowo [B.A. (Hons)., MSc., Ph.D., FHEA.] is a British-Nigerian filmmaker, screenwriter, director, researcher, and educator based in the United Kingdom. She is Principal Academic in Directing for Film & TV at Bournemouth University and her work connects creative practice, postcolonial cinema scholarship, transnational media studies, and collaborative pedagogy.

Her education spans a BA in English Literature from the University of Benin, an MSc in Corporate Communications and PR from the University of West London, a Diploma in Film Directing from the London Academy of Media, Film & TV, a PhD in Film, Television & Cinema from the University of Bristol, and a PG Certificate in Education Practice with Distinction from Bournemouth University. Her doctoral work examined the vestiges of the Colonial Film Unit in neo-Nollywood through postcolonial theory, including colonial mimicry, sly civility, and orientalism, and considered the implications of these vestiges for aesthetics, production, distribution, and access to mainstream Anglo-American distribution markets.

Iwowo's praxis has produced over fifty published screenplays and a wide range of film and television work. Her filmography includes Oloibiri, Go Get Milk, Mugabe, Articulations of Politics in Nigeria, R.U.N.S, After the "I Dos", Wind Chasers, Time Knocks, Just a Maid, Tinsel, Babymamas & Guitars, AIDA-Study Screenplay, Till you're 16, Price of Spice, and Sparrow's Song in pre-production. Oloibiri won Best Screenplay at the NAFCA Awards in 2015, formed part of the winning production team for Best Film at the San Diego Black Film Festival in 2016, and was nominated for Best Screenplay at the AMVCA Awards in 2017. One of Several won the Award of Merit in the Best Shorts Competition in Los Angeles in 2015, while R.U.N.S was nominated for Best Documentary at the AMAA Awards in 2016.

Her research and publication record includes work on neo-Nollywood mise en scene, creativity and pre-visualisation, leadership and culture, and the conceptualisation of the Ubuntu Collaboration Model for minimalist filmmaking. She is currently developing a Routledge-commissioned monograph on decolonising film directing and continues to develop work across postcolonial cinema, African cinema, transnational cinema, Indigenous knowledge, decolonisation, and filmmaking practices including screenwriting, directing, and mise en scene.
